Niagara River Whirlpool in February
Elizabeth Gilbert

State/Province: ON
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 11 x 14 x 1
Artist's Statement: Sliding gingerly down the steep snowy trail we found another world, timeless, turbulent, deep below the cultured cold vineyards on the plain. The Niagara Gorge gave no care for the groomed world of roads and towns and farms, it gave no care for politics or frontiers, it gave no care for anything but it's own circling power, undiminished by the seasons and eons.

Dimensions: 21 x 14 x 1
Artist's Statement: The trail clung to the face of the cliff. Hiding from the heat of the midday sun, the nannies and kids sheltered in shallow caves directly beside the precipitous trail. The rocks in this painting were a key part of both the subject and the composition so I had a lot of fun painting them, putting the nanny mountain goat right in her comfort place.

Sherrill Girard

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Artist's Statement: I painted an elderly friend sitting by a window, her thoughts elsewhere. The light on her face shows a life fully lived. She looks beyond the room with calm and acceptance. I wanted to show her not as fading, but at peace, on the threshold of what comes next.

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 19 x 15
Artist's Statement: I painted this piece after a scene I viewed from a bus heading toward Marrakesh, while looking out the window as we passed a small roadside market. A few local farmers were set up along the dusty road in the busy marketplace, selling the watermelons they had grown. I wanted to hold onto the impression of their hard work and the simple rhythm of daily life, seen briefly through a moving window.

Artist's Statement: Wow! It is cold up here! From a panorama platform, I am looking over at Schrammacher, a mountain in Tyrol Austria. Stunning! I am here during a family holiday in Hintertux. Painting plein air is possible because glacial waters do not freeze here due to the mineral content. Working fast, looking for general shapes and the light as a first step.. Skier's trails are just below. Beautiful! Breathtaking! I must confess the finished work had to be done in a warmer environment drinking hot chocolate!

After Storm
After Storm
Marilena Isacescu Carlea

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 19 x 25 x 1
Artist's Statement: My abstract watercolour titled “After Storm”is part of a series of watercolors of forests on yupo paper. Non-absorbent, and "shiny" surface of yupo paper is ideal for abstract watercolours, as it allows colours to dance, mingle, and create dramatic, unpredictable hard edges when dry. To capture the restless feeling of a forest after a storm, while balancing anxiety and calm, timing the wetness of the paper is critical to controlling colour flow. Applying the watercolour with a wet-on-wet technique, was allowing colours to flow freely, creating organic transitions. As the paint dries, it will form natural, high-contrast hard edges, blooms, that can represent stormy, chaotic branches, guiding the eye to a bright focal point amidst the darkness of the forest.

'A silver string of light sliced through the clouds and struck a nearby tree with its misshapen fingers.'
'A silver string of light sliced through the clouds and struck a nearby tree with its misshapen fingers.'
Ona Kingdon

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 11 x 8.5
Artist's Statement: An illustration from 'The Paper Butterfly' written and illustrated by Ona Kingdon. The Paper Butterfly and her monarch friends encounter a terrifying thunderstorm on their migration south. I wanted the illustration to capture the intensity of the moment when the lightning hit a nearby tree. Painted using my imagination, using the words of my story for inspiration. "Suddenly, a silver string of light sliced through the clouds and with a deafening rumble of anger, it struck a nearby tree with its misshapen fingers. Sparks flew, and flames engulfed its branches. The sickly smell of scorched earth floated through the air."

'The large curtain of monarchs flashed their wings in unison to greet the new arrival'
Ona Kingdon

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 11 x 8.5
Artist's Statement: The painting is an illustration from my recently published book 'The Paper Butterfly'. The illustration depicts the moment when the Paper Butterfly first sees a roost of monarch butterflies at sunset in Point Pelee, Ontario. It was painted using a combination of reference photos taken of monarch butterflies in my own garden and my imagination, with the words of my story for inspiration. 'For the most part, the monarchs were completely still. It was as if they had become part of the tree itself. Then, as another monarch approached the large curtain of butterflies flashed their wings in unison to greet the new arrival.'

Akuyeri Sunset
Akuyeri Sunset
Brent Laycock

State/Province: Alberta
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 10 x 16
Artist's Statement: This watercolour was inspired by the port of Akuyeri during a tour of Iceland. The appeal of this spontaneous approach to watercolour lies in the medium's ability to exert a mind of its own. It just needs a bit of steering and refinement. Too much control can be deadly.

Riot Beside the Greenhouse
Riot Beside the Greenhouse
Brent Laycock

State/Province: Alberta
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 14 x 10
Artist's Statement: My primary desire in this painting is to take the viewer's eye for a wild ride around the painting to explore the rhythms, textures, colours and perhaps some bewildering bits and pieces. It's a bit like listening to a musical performance that verges on overdone complexity, but in the case of this visual performance, you can duck out whenever you want. I hope it was fun.

Hometown Moon, Cape Breton
Hometown Moon, Cape Breton
Patsy MacKinnon

State/Province: NS
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 21 x 29
Artist's Statement: A rising December moon, viewed from my studio window, prompted an immediate response to capture the moment. I painted this full sheet image quickly from memory. Hoping to capture the cold clear night, I utilized a limited palette of cool colour and the white of the paper. The big moon placement on the right balancing the sharp view of my hometown on the lower left. The direction of each brushstroke was purposeful to lead a viewer's eye through the painting. An emotional response to a familiar scene.
